Common questions about our cardiac procedures and treatments
Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery (CABG) is a major surgical procedure where blockages in the coronary arteries are bypassed using suitable grafts, thereby restoring blood flow to the heart muscle (myocardium).
Minimally Invasive Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (MICS CABG) is a surgical technique that utilizes smaller incisions, typically between the ribs, instead of the traditional open-heart approach that involves cutting the breastbone. This method may offer benefits such as faster recovery, reduced pain, and smaller scars.
Off-Pump Coronary Artery Bypass (OPCAB) surgery, also known as "Beating Heart Surgery," is performed on a beating heart without the need for a heart-lung machine. Traditional CABG involves stopping the heart and using a heart-lung machine to oxygenate and circulate blood to the body.
Valve replacement surgery involves replacing a diseased heart valve with either a mechanical or a biological (tissue) prosthesis. These surgeries can be for a single, double, or triple valve. Mechanical valves are long-lasting but require lifelong anticoagulation, while biological valves generally do not require lifelong blood thinners but may need replacement after a certain period.
Blood thinners (anticoagulants) like warfarin or Nicoumalone (Acitrom) are prescribed to prevent blood clot formation. They are particularly important for patients with mechanical prosthetic valves to prevent clots. These patients typically require lifelong anticoagulation and regular monitoring of their INR (International Normalized Ratio).
VATS (Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery) is a minimally invasive surgical technique used to diagnose and treat various conditions within the chest cavity. Surgeons use small incisions to insert a thoracoscope (a thin tube with a camera) and specialized instruments, avoiding large cuts.
An Arteriovenous (AV) fistula surgery creates a connection between an artery and a vein, usually in the arm. This procedure increases blood flow to the vein, making it stronger and more suitable for repeated needle access required for hemodialysis in patients with kidney failure.
Congenital heart defects are structural problems of the heart that are present at birth. These can include holes in the heart (ASD, VSD), valve problems, or complex conditions like Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF). Our department specializes in both pediatric and adult congenital heart surgery.
